Prolate Cores in Filamentary Molecular Clouds
We present a new model of molecular cloud cores that originate from filamentary clouds that are threaded by helical magnetic fields. Only modest toroidal fields are required to produce elongated cores, with intrinsic axis ratios in the range 0.1 < ∼ q < ∼ 0.9 and mean projected axis ratios in the range 0.3 < ∼ 〈p〉 < ∼ 1. Thus many of our models are in good agreement with the observed shapes of ...
متن کاملCollapse of Rotating Magnetized Molecular Cloud Cores and Mass Outflows
Collapse of the rotating magnetized molecular cloud core is studied with the axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations. Due to the change of the equation of state of the interstellar gas, the molecular cloud cores experience several different phases as collapse proceeds. In the isothermal run-away collapse (n ∼< 10 H2 cm ), a pseudo-disk is formed and it continues to contract till th...
متن کاملPolarized dust emission of magnetized molecular cloud cores
We compute polarization maps for molecular cloud cores modeled as magnetized singular isothermal toroids, under the assumption that the emitting dust grains are aspherical and aligned with the large-scale magnetic field. We show that, depending on the inclination of the toroid with the line-of-sight, the bending of the magnetic field lines resulting from the need to counteract the inward pull o...
متن کاملMagnetic Braking of Prolate and Oblate Cores
The collapse and fragmentation of initially prolate and oblate, magnetic molecular clouds is calculated in three dimensions with a gravitational, radiative hydrodynamics code. The code includes magnetic field effects in an approximate manner: magnetic pressure, tension, braking, and ambipolar diffusion are all modelled. The parameters varied for both the initially prolate and oblate clouds are ...
متن کاملThe Structure of Cold Molecular Cloud Cores
A brief summary is presented of our current knowledge of the structure of cold molecular cloud cores that do not contain proto-stars, sometimes known as starless cores. The most centrally condensed starless cores are known as pre-stellar cores. These cores probably represent observationally the initial conditions for protostellar collapse that must be input into all models of star formation. Th...
